1. Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott,
ein gute Wehr und Waffen.
Er hilft uns frei aus aller Not,
die uns jetzt hat betroffen.
Der alt böse Feind,
mit Ernst er's jetzt meint;
groß Macht und viel List
sein grausam Rüstung ist,
auf Erd ist nicht seinsgleichen.
Our God is a solid fortress, a good defence and weapon;
He helps us willingly in all distress, which currently afflicts us.
The old, wicked foe now takes is seriously ,
great power and much cunning are his cruel weapons,
On earth there is nothing comparable to him.
2. Mit unsrer Macht ist nichts getan,
wir sind gar bald verloren;
es streit für uns der rechte Mann,
den Gott hat selbst erkoren.
Fragst du, wer der ist?
Er heißt Jesus Christ,
der Herr Zebaoth,
und ist kein andrer Gott;
das Feld muß er behalten.
With our power nothing can be done, we are almost quite lost.
For us battles the right man, who God himself has chosen.
You ask, who is He? He is called Jesus Christ,
the Lord of Sabaoth, and there is no other God,
He must retain the (battle)field.

3. Und wenn die Welt voll Teufel wär
und wollt uns gar verschlingen,
so fürchten wir uns nicht so sehr,
es soll uns dich gelingen.
Der Fürst dieser Welt,
wie sau’r er sich stellt,
tut er uns doch nicht;
das macht, er ist Gericht’:
Ein Wörtlein kann ihn fällen.
And if the world were full of the devil and he wanted to devour us,
even then we would not be so fearful, we should even then succeed.
The prince of that world, however harsh he presents himself as being,
can, however, do nothing to us; since he is already judged,
a little word can topple him.
4. Das Wort sie solle lassen stehn
und kein’ Dank dazu haben;
er ist bei uns wohl auf dem Plan
mit seinem Geist und Gaben.
Nehmen sie den Leib,
Gut, Ehr, Kind und Weib:
Lass fahren dahin,
sie haben’s kein’ Gewinn,
das Reich muss uns doch bleiben.
They shall put His word aside and think no more about it;
He is indeed beside us on the (battle)field with His spirit and His gifts.
If they take our bodies from us, possessions, honour, child, wife,
let them take them away, they have no spoils of victory;

Psalm 46, vv. 2-12
Gott ist unsre Zuversicht und Stärke,
eine Hilfe in den großen Nöten, die uns getroffen haben.
Darum fürchten wir uns nicht, wenngleich die Welt unterginge
und die Berge mitten ins Meer sänken,
wenngleich das Meer wütete und wallte
und von seinem Ungestüm die Berge einfielen.
Dennoch soll die Stadt Gottes fein lustig bleiben mit ihren Brünnlein,
da die heiligen Wohnungen des Höchsten sind.
Gott ist bei ihr drinnen, darum wird sie festbleiben;
Gott hilft ihr früh am Morgen.
Die Heiden müssen verzagend die Königreiche fallen,
das Erdreich muss vergehen, wenn er sich hören lässt.
Der Herr Zebaoth ist mit uns,
der Gott Jakobs ist unser Schutz.
Kommt her und schauet die Werke des Herrn,
der auf Erden solch ein Zerstören anrichtet,
der den Kriegen steuert in aller Welt,
der Bogen zerbricht, Spieße zerschlägt und Wagen mit Feuer verbrennt.
Seid stille und erkennet, dass ich Gott bin!
Ich will der Höchste sein unter den Heiden, der Höchste auf Erden.
Der Herr Zebaoth ist mit uns,
der Gott Jakobs ist unser Schutz.

1. Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten
und hoffet auf ihn allezeit,
Den wird er wunderbar erhalten
in aller Not und Traurigkeit.
Wer Gott, dem Allerhöchsten, traut,
der hat auf keinen Sand gebaut.
Whoever allows dear God alone to govern him and places hope in Him always, he will receive wondrous things even in need and sorrow,
Whoever trusts God the Almighty has not built on sand.
2. Was helfen uns die schweren Sorgen,
was hilft uns unser Weh und Ach?
Was hilft es, dass wir alle Morgen
beseufzen unser Ungemach?
Wir machen unser Kreuz und Leid
nur größer durch die Traurigkeit.
What help are heavy worries to us, what help is our woe and wailing?
What does it help, to bemoan our powerlessness every day?
We make our suffering and sorrow only greater through the sadness.

3. Man halte nur ein wenig stille
und sei doch in sich selbst vergnügt,
wie unsers Gottes Gnadenwille,
wie sein Allwissenheit es fügt;
Gott, der uns sich hat auserwählt,
der weiß auch sehr wohl, was uns fehlt.
One should at least be able to be silent and be at peace with oneself,
just as with our God’s gracious will, for his omniscience makes it so.
God, who has chosen us for himself, knows very well what we lack.
4. Er kennt die rechten Freudenstunden,
er weiß wohl, wann es nützlich sei;
wenn er uns nur hat treu erfunden
und merket keine Heuchelei,
so kommt Gott, eh wir’s uns versehen,
und lässet uns viel Guts geschehn.
He knows the genuine joyful moments, he knows precisely when it's important; he has created us only to be faithful and percieves no duplicity, as before we err, God comes and bestows much good upon us.

5. Denk nicht in deiner Drangsalshitze,
dass du von Gott verlassen seist
und dass ihm der im Schoße sitze,
der sich mit stetem Glücke speist.
Die Folgezeit verändert viel
und setzet jeglichem sein Ziel.
Think not that you have been deserted by God in the heat of your trials
and that he who sits at His right hand constantly feeds on joy.
Eternity changes much and sets the goal for all things.
6. Es sind ja Gott sehr leichte Sachen
und ist dem Höchsten alles gleich:
den Reichen klein und arm zu machen,
den Armen aber groß und reich.
Gott ist der rechte Wundermann,
der bald erhöhn, bald stürzen kann.
For God these things are very easily done, and it is all the same to Him:
To make the rich to be small and poor, but the poor to be great and rich.
God is the true miracle worker, who can suddenly raise up and cast down.
7. Sing, bet und geh auf Gottes Wegen,
verricht das Deine nur getreu
und trau des Himmels reichem Segen,
so wird er bei dir werden neu.
Denn welcher seine Zuversicht
auf Gott setzt, der verlässt er nicht.
Sing, pray and go on God's way, perform your part only faithfully,
and trust Heavens’ rich blessing, so that He will become new in you.
For whoever places their trust in God, He will not desert them.

1. Es ist gewißlich an der Zeit,
daß Gottes Sohn wird kommen
in seiner großen Herrlichkeit,
zu richten Bös und Fromme.
Dann wird das Lachen werden teu’r,
wenn Alles wird vergehn in Feu’r,
wie Petrus davon schreibet.
It is certainly high time, that God's Son will come
in his great splendour to judge the wicked and the pious.
Then the laughing will be costly, when everything is consumed by fire,
just as Peter wrote about.
2. Posaunen wird man hören gehn
an aller Welten Ende;
darauf bald werden auferstehn
all Toten gar behände.
Die aber noch das Leben han,
die wird der Herr von Stunden an
verwandeln und erneuen.
The playing of trumpets will be heard at the end of the world;
soon after this all of the agile dead will rise up.
However, those who still live, from thenceforth the Lord will
transform and renew them.

3. Danach wird man ablesen bald,
ein Buch, darin geschrieben
was alle Menschen, Jung und Alt
auf Erden je getrieben.
Da denn gewiß ein jedermann
wird hören, was er hat getan
in seinem ganzen Leben.
Soon afterwards a book will be read, in which is written
what all people, young and old, have ever done on earth.
There and then, undoubtedly, the everyman
will hear, what he has done
in his whole life.
4. O weh demselben, welcher hat
des Herren Wort verachtet
und nur auf Erden früh und spät
nach großem Gut getrachtet,
Er wird fürwahr gar schlecht bestehn,
und mit dem Satan müssen gehn
von Christus in die Hölle.
O woe betide the person who has defied the word of the Lord
and on earth, morning and night, has only gathered possessions.
His passing will, in truth, be really bad, and with Satan he must go
away from Christ into hell.

O Jesus, help me when that time comes, because of your wounds,
so that I shall find myself written in the book of salvation.
About this I have no doubts, as you have already judged the enemy,
and paid the price of my sin.
6. Derhalben mein Fürsprecher sei,
wenn du nun wirst erscheinen,
und ließ mich aus dem Buche frei,
darinnen stehn die Deinen,
auf daß ich, sammt den Brüdern mein,
mit dir geh in den Himmel ein,
den du uns hast erworben.
Therefore be my advocate, when you appear, and read me into freedom out of the book, in which those who belong to You are written,
because of this I, together with my brothers, will go with You into heaven,
and for this you have paid the price.

Ver_wandlung: Neue Interpretationen alter Kirchenmelodien für Orgel und Live Looping
Ver_wandlung (Metamorphosis) is a collection of pieces for pipe organ and live looping composed for a liturgical context and represent Pam Hulme’s development of this performance practice from 2016 to 2020.
The three chorale suites and one improvisation which make up this album reinterpret hymn melodies of the 16th and 17th centuries, transporting them into a contemporary sound-world. Using conventions found in electronic music to shape acoustic sound in real time, Pam Hulme creates a Klangteppich (sound-tapestry) from repeated loops recorded live using condenser microphones placed inside the organ, and a separate dynamic microphone for voice. This musical material is then manipulated in live performance using a Boss RC-505 Loop Station and played back on speakers in ensemble with the acoustic pipe organ.
